Okay. I’m comfortable taking care of horses and I rode often when I was young. I’m not an expert though and I could not break a wild horse or effectively train a foal. Why do you ask?

Jem Carmichael was going to give me riding lessons as a refresher before I borrow a horse from their stables to travel back between Lundegaard and Prescott, if that is your concern.

After biking with Behemoth wrapped against his chest like a giant furry baby, and with the help of Zelda, John brings Maggie her beloved cat. He is incredibly sweaty and a bit winded from physical exertion, and so spends a good 10 minutes or so of his visit lying spread-eagle on the floor next to Maggie’s cot.

This is their last day sharing his house. He has no idea how to broach the topic, or even what he should say once he does. So long? You were a pleasure to have in class? So he has decided to let his new bounty of magazines do the conversational heavy lifting for him. Unprompted, John passes Maggie a tear-out from a magazine through their divider.

Maggie has come to expect and look forward to these magazine missives passed through their modesty screen. She doesn’t even have to look up from her work darning one of her woolen socks in order to reach over and pluck the tear out from John’s hand.

She lays it on the ground next to her and reads it over while she continues to weave columns of yarn across a hole in the heel.

It’s silent for a full two minutes, which John should know by now means that Maggie is giving this serious thought. Then, finally:

“These lists were designed to annoy people.”
